The UNDP/GEF regional project Development and Implementation of the Lake
Peipsi/Chudskoe Basin Management Programme, launched in January 2003 in
Estonia and Russia, contributes to improvement of environmental conditions
of the Lake Peipsi/Pskovsko-Chudskoe water basin and to sustainable
conservation of habitats and eco-systems in the cross-border region.

The opening meeting of the project took place in Rizhskaya Hotel in Pskov,
on Friday, January 31. The three-year long (Jan 2003 - Dec 2005) project was
prepared in co-operation with the UN Development Programme, Global
Environment Facility (GEF), Peipsi Center for Transboundary Cooperation,
Estonian Ministry of the Environment and Ministry of Natural Resources of
the Russian Federation.

In the course of the meeting, the steering committee and the partners of the
project approved the action plan for this current year and discussed on how
to co-ordinate the GEF project with other projects targeted at the Lake
Peipsi basin. The steering committee comprises the representatives of the
Ministry of Natural Resources of the RF (MNR RF) and its territorial bodies
such as Neva-Ladoga Water Basin Administration and Committee of Natural
Resources and Environmental Protection for the Pskov region, Estonian
Ministry of Environment (EMoE) and its branch - the Committee of
Environmental Protection of the Tartu County, UNDP, Ministries of Foreign
Affairs of the RF and Estonia, Estonian Ministry of Agriculture,
Roshydromet, Pskov and Leningrad Regional Administrations, Tartu and
Ida-Virumaa County Administrations, and NGOs.
The main goal of the project is to develop and start implementation of the
Lake Peipsi/Chudskoe Basin Management Programme including practical
recommendations for the Lake Peipsi/Chudskoe nutrient load reduction and
prevention and the protection of habitats and ecosystems in this
transboundary region. Project activities take place in Estonia as well as in
Russia, both jointly and separately. Joint efforts will be used for the
creation and partial implementation of the basin management plan and for the
support of joint co-ordinated water monitoring programme.

These activities will be support by pilot projects - development of the plan
for public water supply and sewerage in Rapina rural municipality,
establishment of a nature tourism track, opening of two Lake Peipsi Museums
in Kallaste and in Pskov region. In addition, a study programme on water
protection shall be composed for schools in Lake Peipsi region, training
sessions will be organised for local inhabitants and environmental
specialists, and finally,
assistance will be provided for the development of ecotourism and organic
agriculture.

Global Environment Facility is a joint fund from three world organisations -
UN Development Programme (UNDP), UN Environmental Programme (UNEP) and that
of the World Bank - supporting and contributing to sustainable human
development.
